Do you think Beauty has more economic value than being good in academics?

Do you think Beauty has more economic value than being good in academics?

I think people look at you and see how beautiful you look,
and they don;t care if you have an outstanding talent or a double degree. The first thing they look at is your body, so a supermodel fit body is more better than having a college degree.

Do you agree?
Sad but true?

No, because if you choose to be a gold digger, the person you marry will be skilled in academics. And if you get a job based on beauty rather than merit, then you will be fired as soon as your boss sees your lousy performance or he or she will keep you and you would be sexually harrassed.

for the majority of people i would say this is true.
we have become used to the idea that the external representation of us (our appearance)
directly reflects our overall value.

this may have something to do with the animal kingdom.

There's certainly a lot of truth to that. People in this society are pretty obsessed with physical beauty, and this society is so much about buying and selling that physical beauty is highly valued in the marketplace.

But beauty isn't everything, by any means. Talent is valued too. It's a matter of having a talent that people value.

A college degree, by itself, isn't valued much these days, because it's not much of a measure of one's skills. A degree isn't enough; you have to show that you can produce what people want.

To an extent. People want you to look a certain way. Not only in the modelling industry, but in just about a majority of the careers. If your appearance isn't what they choose to call "welcoming" then they turn you down. After you have talent and skill, the next thing they want you to have is appearance.

Peace.

In a shallow world yes.

I don't like supermodel types, 6 feet they're too tall for me.
I'd prefer a decent looking girl with a good amount of knowledge.

May be in the oldest profession.

Looks may be the lure but intelligence is the hook. Looks are also only for a season and only pleasing to the 'beholder.' However for true peace of spirit we must learn to live at ease within our own skin. Besides sexy is superficial, sensual is from within and rare indeed.

Of course. Modern society tends to look at bodily looks rather than deeds. For example, there are more pictures of celebrities and models running around in magazines that make a lot of money than scientists and philosophers talking about cosmology and the meaning of life. I guess it has something to do with animal instinct, the female's beauty challenges males to fight each other in order to carry the best genes and therefore, "evolve" to a higher species. However, if a person is so beautiful the beauty can be a curse. In a woman's case, the one who hired her will (cough*rape*cough) sexually abuse her, sell her for (cough*whore*cough) illegal prostitution (to make more money), or if the girl defies she will lose the job and go back to poverty. It's even worse with ancient times, where for the sake of money, beautiful girls are sold as sex slaves who are virtually dolls with no rights.

Sorry for the long paragraph, but the conclusion is, beauty has more economic value than intelligence, but still, intelligence is the most reliable option.

I agree.

Surveys have shown that beautiful people get higher pay than ugly ones ;-p

Recent survey also show that 1/3 of UK students willing to become a strippers/prositutes to fund their studies ;-p
