other than name and price, there really isn't a difference.

soo not true.
you get what you pay for.
store bought shampoos usually have more silicone and other drying agents.
salon ones are more concentrated, which allows you to use LESS, they have more quality products, and they are always on sale somewhere. in the end they sometimes cost LESS if you can find the big liters on sale. ULTA has fantastic liter sales multiple times a year.

Usually there is a difference in the ingredients. Professional companies use better ingredients and their chemists are constantly trying to figure out the best way to improve hair-care. There are a couple of drugstore brands that work just as well (Dove, TreSemme), but for the most part, chemically-speaking, professional products do work better. I've compared them before (Frederic Fekkai conditioner vs. Pantene conditioner, etc). You can really feel the difference in your hair.
Hope that helps...

There are some products that are better than store brands and professional brands that are not commercially advertised, so I know there is a difference.

Isn't it just the price?

Most of the time your paying more for marketing. Take vitamins for example... the generics ones are fine, why pay for a brand name? Maybe some shampoo will have extra junk in there like perfume or rare herbs, but most of the time your paying for brand name and that logo on the label.

cheaper products can damage your hair due to high alchohol.
and some that claim to defrizz and make hair shine are only coating your hair with waxy buildup. if however you like the cheaper brands (i myself really love finesse, pantene.) and you feel like you might have buildup from them try a clarifying shampoo once a week.(neutrnogena makes a great one.)also im not sure if you have a Sallys beauty supply store near you but they sell great "copies" of salon brands.all the ingredients are compared side by side on the back of the bottle the only difference is the price.hope this helps.one more thing stay away from clear shampoos they tend to be more drying to the hair.
