Q&A: Why does my friend care SO much about beauty?

Its almost pathetic, she has cried countless times infront of me (even though i can see she tries to hold it back) when people who she doesnt even know dont compliment her beauty. Or when a guy doesnt show signs of wanting to have sex with her. It is really a problem.

I am not sure, but i think it is coming from her abusive childhood...her parents didnt love her at all, and now her mother is dead. It seems all she pursues is beauty.

Do you think it is from the abuse she experienced, or is it just her personality?

You read the signs wrongly ... It's not beauty that she's pursuing.
It's her need to feel "wanted" and "loved" that's causing her to feel insecure about her looks. Because for many people, beauty is the most straight forward way to gaining attention to feel like she's wanted and loved.

Show her more care and concern. Her friends should do that too. Then perhaps she'll feel less lonely.

I think it is like you said, he personality and her childhood with her non-loving parents. I think that she has a very low self-esteem level and has a negative self image, she probably considers herself as a pathetic lame person. A self image is a mental image of yourself. It is build up from your additudes and your beliefs. So since she felt as if no one wanted her as a child, she wishes for everyguy to want her now.

This obsession over physical appearance has probably stemmed from her abusive childhood. She feels as though she is lacking in many areas because she has lost her self-confidence due to the abuse. Maybe she should seek professional help, it could turn her life around. She needs to confront the things that have been holding her down because the problem is only going to get worse if she doesn't adress it, wether she knows it or not.

Yes, your friend has some serious emotional/mental problems that needs to be dealt with. What she is experiencing is not normal and quite narcissistic. She defines herself by her looks alone and that tells me she is in a great deal of pain beneath the surface. It sounds like she has yet to deal with her issues of past and losing a mom can be very devastating for a young girl. Is there any way you can talk to her about getting some help? Continue to let her know how much you care and compliment her on the other qualities I am sure she has. She needs to find some balance here. Is there an adult in her life that you can also share this with, that would understand and help her? I certainly wish you well and do hope everything turns out positively. Take care

let her be. mind your own business and let her take care of her problems.

Well she has a problem called attention deficit syndrome, she believes the world revolves around her and when it dose not revolve around her she dose not know how to react, so she starts to cry to let out the pressure building up, it is much better then screaming at people PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEE!!!!! I do not believe that anything that has been done in her childhood is affecting her now I just think she thinks she is all that and when someone dose not think so she can not stand it and makes her feel like there is something wrong with her, so she reacts in a negative way because like a baby she is not getting what she wants.
