Question by ryan: How do men keep short hair flat?
Alright, I just got my hair cut, and It looks better when I come out of the shower and kinda get it flattened. How do I make my hair flat, but without really any expensive haircare products or taking more than a minute to set it for the day......I wrestle and play football, plus I'm active a lot with just anything really ( I get competitve, so a friendly game of kickball might turn into the world series for me=sweating like crazy) and when i sweat, my hair kinda gains more volume, but not to where its like spiked. My hair is aprox. 1.25 inches long, and it's like a traditional cut. I wear a hat sometimes to try and flattne it, but it's not that great of an idea...Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand the question, if you are asking how to keep a flat top crew cut upright so it looks flat on top; if it was cut correctly then this is all that is required:
1)Towel dry hair.
2)Barely dip fingertips in a jar of butch wax.
3)Transfer wax on to palms.
4)Smooth palms over top hair.
5)Brush hair back off forehead to form short pompadour front.
But I'm not sure that is the question you are asking because you state you wear a hat to flatten it. Do you have a forward brush and want it to lay forward flat to the skull or are you wanting to wear an ivy league parted and combed to the side instead of combed back to form the short pomp front. All of these styles depend on the correct graduation of the length of the top hair, in accordance to the slope of the skull to the front hairline, and the hair's angle of growth from the scalp, and the hair's density/coarseness/texture. If all the top hair is cut at 1.25", which would be a very long brush cut, your hair will not lay flat on the scalp as you wish without applying more than a minute amount of wax or gel.

[Note the graduation of the top hair according to the slope of the skull. With a crew cut the idea is for the outline of the top hair to approach the horizontal when the head is viewed in side profile, but to contour to varying degrees to the skull shape when viewed from the front. With a flat top crew cut, the outline of the hair on top appears horizontal in side profile and face on.]

The basic short styles are explained at this answer. Be sure to open the first two links:

To determine hair lengths in photos, compare the hair length to the face length or vertical height of the ear and adjust proportionally. Assume most faces are in the 7" to 9" range, from the hairline to the tip of the chin, and ears are in the 2.5" -3" range. For some of the short styles it is advisable to ask around to learn of a barber who is adept at cutting them and take a few photos to help describe it to the barber. Don't rely on haircut terms alone as they can be widely interpreted.
Good Luck!
